About this route
This is a day trip with no overnight stay. You can do it by scheduled bus (in which case Taltsy may have to wait for another day, unless the driver agrees to stop at the turn-off) or by taxi or car, which leaves time for everything.
To stay longer in Listvyanka, continue with our route “Listvyanka: village, shoreline and local attractions”.
The interactive map is unavailable — below is a sketch of the route and the full written itinerary.

This open-air museum on the Angara brings together wooden buildings from across the region, including some rescued from land flooded by reservoirs. Its highlights are the tower of the Ilimsk stockade and the Kazan church, both moved from Ilimsk. There are also peasant homesteads, mills, a school and Buryat, Evenk and Tofalar dwellings.

The source of the Angara and the Shaman Stone
Getting there. About 20 km further along the highway to Listvyanka; the best view is from the shore by the Baikal Museum.

The Angara is the only river that flows out of Lake Baikal. At its source the Shaman Stone rises from the water. Legend says Father Baikal hurled the rock after his daughter Angara as she fled to the Yenisei. When the Irkutsk dam raised the water level, the stone sank lower in the water.
What to look for
How the surface of the water changes where it leaves the lake — this is where the current begins.

The fish market and Listvyanka waterfront
Getting there. About 500 m along the shore.

By the pier is a market of smoked fish and souvenirs, with cafés and viewpoints along the shore beyond. From here you can see the far bank of the Angara source and the village of Port Baikal.
Tip
Ask where the fish comes from: omul fishing has been heavily restricted since 2017.

Practical tips
Transport
Bus or minibus — from Irkutsk bus station to Listvyanka, several departures a day. Times change: check the operator or an aggregator. Taxi or car — about 1–1.5 hours non-stop. Taltsy is at kilometre 47 of the highway, with an access road from the turn-off.
Practical tips
- Leave in the morning: you need the whole day.
- Find out the time of the last bus back.
- Taltsy involves a lot of walking on grass and boardwalks — wear comfortable shoes.
Seasonal notes
All year. In winter the Angara source steams, and Taltsy holds folk festivals (dates from the museum). Summer weekends bring heavy traffic.
Accessibility
The Baikal Museum is the most accessible; the Taltsy grounds are large, with uneven paths.
Safety and caring for nature
Do not walk onto the ice near the Angara source — the current keeps it thin. On the highway stop only where permitted.
Budget
A return bus ticket plus admission to two museums; a taxi costs considerably more but saves time.
