The village of Listvyanka stretches for several kilometres along Lake Baikal, right beside the source of the Angara. For most travellers this is where they first see the lake: the drive from Irkutsk takes about an hour and a half.

What has been verified. Checked against official sources on the verification date: operators, ways of getting there and the existence of seasonal restrictions. Timetables, fares and seasonal crossing dates are deliberately not reproduced — follow the operator links.

Why visit

Listvyanka is the easiest way to see Baikal without staying overnight. It has the source of the Angara with the Shaman Stone, the Baikal Museum with live seals, the viewpoint at Chersky Stone and a smoked-fish market. On the way you pass Taltsy, an open-air museum of wooden architecture.

It is a tourist village and busy at weekends, but walk towards the Krestovka valley or up onto a trail and Baikal becomes the lake you came to see.

What to see

  • The source of the Angara and the Shaman Stone — best seen from the shore near the Baikal Museum.
  • The Baikal Museum — exhibitions on the lake and aquariums with Baikal seals.
  • Chersky Stone — a viewpoint above the Angara source (by trail, or by chairlift when it operates).
  • The fish market by the pier — smoked fish and souvenirs.
  • St Nicholas Church in the Krestovka valley.
  • On the way from Irkutsk — the Taltsy museum at kilometre 47 of the Baikal Highway.

Getting there from Irkutsk

Listvyanka is reached by the paved Baikal Highway (Baikalsky trakt), roughly 70 km from Irkutsk. Go by scheduled bus or minibus from the bus station, by taxi or by car. In the navigation season river boats also run along the Angara and Baikal.

Transport options

  • Bus / minibus — from Irkutsk bus station, several departures a day; times change, so check the operator or an aggregator.
  • Taxi or transfer — the most flexible option, and the easiest way to stop at Taltsy and the viewpoints.
  • River boat — seasonal, on the East Siberian River Shipping Company timetable.
  • Listvyanka–Port Baikal ferry — links the village with the start of the Circum-Baikal Railway on the far side of the Angara source.

Where journeys start

Irkutsk bus station, Oktyabrskoy Revolyutsii St, 11. In Listvyanka buses stop along the main road (Gorkogo St), including by the Baikal Museum and the pier.

How the seasons differ

In summer the water near the shore stays cold even in August, and weekends are crowded. In winter the source of the Angara never freezes and steam rises from the dark water — one of the most beautiful sights near Listvyanka. The lake itself usually freezes later here than in sheltered bays.

In the shoulder seasons (freeze-up and break-up) ferry and boat timetables change, and some cafés and attractions close.

Before you go

  • If you plan to return the same day, check the time of the last bus back before you go.
  • Climb to Chersky Stone in daylight — in winter allow plenty of time.
  • Expect queues at the Baikal Museum and the seal aquarium at weekends and holidays.

Risks and restrictions

Do not walk on the ice near the source of the Angara: the current keeps the water open and the ice edge is dangerous throughout the winter. In spring and autumn Baikal ice is unpredictable everywhere. The woods around the village have ticks in early summer.
