This is a multi-day journey that needs overnight stays along the way. Please do not try to squeeze it into a single day.
The classic first trip to Baikal at your own pace: a day in Irkutsk, a day in Listvyanka, the road to Olkhon, two days on the island and a return along the western shore. It needs overnight stays and cannot be done in a day or two.
About this route
Day 1 — Irkutsk. The historic centre, the 130th Quarter and an evening on the embankment (see “A One-Day Introduction to Irkutsk”).
Day 2 — Listvyanka. Taltsy, the Angara source, the Baikal Museum and Chersky Stone; stay in Listvyanka or return to Irkutsk.
Day 3 — the road to Olkhon. Via Bayandai and the Tazheran steppe to the crossing and on to Khuzhir; evening at Shaman Rock.
Day 4 — northern Olkhon. A four-by-four trip to Peschanaya, Sagan-Khushun and Cape Khoboy.
Day 5 — Khuzhir and the Maloye More. The Revyakin museum, Sarai Beach and a free day.
Day 6 — back to Irkutsk. An early start to beat the queue at the crossing; a stop by the Maloye More on the mainland shore.
The interactive map is unavailable — below is a sketch of the route and the full written itinerary.
Schematic: stops are joined by straight lines. This is not a walking track — follow the written directions. The map mirrors the list of stops below; all information is available without the map.

Practical tips
Transport
Irkutsk–Listvyanka: bus or taxi. Irkutsk–Khuzhir: bus, transfer or car; the crossing depends on the season. Northern Olkhon: an excursion four-by-four. If you return from Listvyanka to Irkutsk for the night, the Olkhon leg starts from Irkutsk.
Practical tips
- Book Olkhon accommodation early for July and August.
- Keep one spare day for bad weather or a long ferry queue.
- Take cash to Olkhon.
Seasonal notes
The best seasons are June to September and mid-February to March (for the ice). In the shoulder seasons (April–May, November–January) the Olkhon crossing is limited: in those months this itinerary needs flexibility, or swap Olkhon for Goloustnoye and the Circum-Baikal Railway.
Accessibility
Long rides on Olkhon’s dirt roads; walks over uneven paths.
Safety and caring for nature
All the advice on ice, ticks and national park rules in the individual routes applies here too. Tell someone your plans for days without mobile coverage.
Budget
The total is made up of five nights’ accommodation, transport to Listvyanka and Olkhon, the northern Olkhon trip, museum tickets and any national park fee. Prices vary greatly by season — check with providers.
