The road to Olkhon is a journey in itself: about 250 km of highway across Buryat steppe, a crossing of the strait, and 40 km over the island to Khuzhir. This route describes a day on the road and how it changes with the seasons.
About this route
This is a travel day, not a stroll: allow 5–7 hours, and more in July and August because of queues at the crossing. A trip to Olkhon usually takes several days — a day to get there, one or two on the island and a day back. Please do not try to visit Olkhon from Irkutsk in a single day.
How you cross the strait depends on the season: a ferry in summer, an ice road in mid-winter (in years when it opens) and passenger hovercraft in between. Dates are set each year — see the Irkutsk Oblast official portal.
The interactive map is unavailable — below is a sketch of the route and the full written itinerary.
Schematic: stops are joined by straight lines. This is not a walking track — follow the written directions. The map mirrors the list of stops below; all information is available without the map.

The Olkhon Gate strait separates the island from the mainland. In summer a ferry runs, and on peak days the car queue can last hours; bus passengers usually get across faster. In winter and the shoulder seasons the crossing works differently — check in advance.

Practical tips
Transport
- Scheduled bus / minibus to Khuzhir — from Irkutsk bus station.
- Transfer — from your hotel, usually with a stop on the way.
- Your own car — paved to the crossing, dirt road on the island; long ferry queues in season.
Practical tips
- Set off early to reach the crossing before the main queue.
- Book your return ticket in advance in high season.
- Take cash and water.
Seasonal notes
Summer means the ferry and queues; autumn is quieter, with the ferry until freeze-up; mid-winter brings the ice road in years when it opens; spring and early winter are in-between seasons with limited links.
Accessibility
A long journey; the dirt road on the island is dusty and bumpy.
Safety and caring for nature
Never drive onto the ice outside the official ice road. Keep speeds low on the island’s rough tracks.
Budget
A bus ticket or transfer; by car, the vehicle crossing and fuel. A national park fee may apply.
