Getting to Olkhon is straightforward once you understand how the crossing works in each season. Here is the road from Irkutsk, the ferry, the ice road, the hovercraft and the most common mistakes — without invented timetables.

We deliberately do not publish departure times: the ferry timetable and the ice-road dates are set anew every year. Below is how it all works, and where to find current information.

The road from Irkutsk

It is about 250 km from Irkutsk to the crossing, on a paved highway via Bayandai and Elantsy. The crossing is near the village of Sakhyurta (often called MRS). Beyond the strait it is about 40 km across the island to Khuzhir, mostly on dirt road. The whole journey takes 5–7 hours — longer in summer, when there are queues at the crossing.

How to cross the strait

PeriodHow people cross
Late spring to early winterFerry across the Olkhon Gate strait. In summer the queue for cars can last hours.
Freeze-up (usually December–January)The ferry stops; passengers are carried by hovercraft.
Mid-winter (often mid-February to late March)An official ice road — if the ice is strong enough and the authorities open it.
Break-up (spring)Hovercraft again until the navigation season begins.

Ferry and ice-road dates are published on the Irkutsk Oblast official portal. Check it before you travel.

Bus, transfer or your own car

  • A bus or minibus from Irkutsk bus station goes straight to Khuzhir. Foot passengers usually cross faster than cars.
  • A transfer collects you from your hotel and often stops on the way.
  • Your own car gives freedom, but in summer the ferry queue can take hours, and the north of the island needs a four-wheel drive.

Common mistakes

  1. Trying to visit Olkhon in a day. One way takes half a day. Plan at least two nights on the island.
  2. Travelling in the shoulder season without checking. During freeze-up and break-up, links with the island are limited.
  3. Driving onto the ice outside the official road. Every winter vehicles break through the ice on Baikal.
  4. Not bringing cash. Cards are not accepted everywhere on the island.

National park fees

A large part of the island lies within Pribaikalsky National Park. A fee may be charged for visiting some areas; current rules and payment methods are on the website of Zapovednoe Pribaikalye, the park authority.
