The north of Olkhon has the island’s most dramatic scenery: pine-fringed bays, the marble crags of Sagan-Khushun and Cape Khoboy, where the island drops sheer into deep Baikal. It is reached only by dirt roads — usually on an excursion four-by-four from Khuzhir.

About this route

This is a full-day trip on forest and steppe tracks. Most travellers go with local drivers, booked through Khuzhir guesthouses. An ordinary car will not do: the tracks are rough and part of the area is a national park with traffic restrictions.

Here, independence means choosing your stops and pace rather than driving. The description below explains what you will see so you can ask your driver to stop where it matters to you.

  1. Stop 1 · Time here: 15 min

    Khuzhir — departure

Four-by-fours usually leave guesthouses in the morning. Confirm the return time and what the trip includes.

  2. Stop 2 · Time here: 40 min

    Peschanaya

Getting there. About 25 km north-east along a forest track.

A former settlement by a bay with a sandy shore and pines. Remains of Soviet-era fishing buildings survive; the bay is one of the quietest places on the island.

  3. Stop 3 · Time here: 45 min

    Cape Sagan-Khushun (the “Three Brothers”)

Getting there. Further north along the eastern shore.

The name means “White Cape” in Buryat: crags of pale marble splashed with orange lichen. Legend says the three rocks are three brothers turned to stone for their disobedience.

    What to look for

The contrast of white marble, rust-coloured lichen and deep blue water.

  4. Stop 4 · Time here: 60 min

    Cape Khoboy

Getting there. About 7 km to the northern tip.

The northern tip of Olkhon; the name is usually translated from Buryat as “fang”. From the cliffs you look out over the open lake, and on clear days across to the Svyatoy Nos peninsula. In spring and summer seals are sometimes seen on the rocks below.

    Tip

The clifftop path is narrow — do not go near the edge for photos.

Practical tips

Transport

An excursion four-by-four with a driver from Khuzhir (book through your guesthouse the day before). In winter northern trips often run along the shore on the ice — only with experienced local drivers and only when the ice is officially open.

Practical tips

  • Bring a warm jacket even in July — Khoboy is very windy.
  • Many drivers cook lunch over a fire on the shore — ask in advance.
  • There is almost no mobile signal in the north.

Seasonal notes

Dust and greenery in summer, golden larches in autumn. Late winter brings ice grottoes and frozen spray on the capes — but only with reliable operators. During break-up and freeze-up trips are restricted.

Accessibility

A bumpy ride; short walks over uneven ground to the clifftops at each cape.

Safety and caring for nature

Stay well back from the cliff edges at Khoboy and Sagan-Khushun. In winter go onto the ice only on permitted routes; cracks and open water are dangerous.

Budget

Four-by-four excursion prices are set by local operators and change every season; a national park fee may apply.
